Type Design
This was an international collaborative project coordinated by The Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology (PJAIT).
In a team of three (Anastasiia Ivanova, Konstantinos Mouchas, Kacper Jaroszyński), we developed a typeface that merged Irish, Greek and Ukrainian cultures and produced graphic outcomes and public interventions.
Duration: 2 weeks
Context: International college workshop (year 1)
After we combined our research and brainstormed initial ideas, we decided to create a hybrid typeface that would combine characters from each culture and create coherent, yet unique, visual identity. Here you can see three different alphabets separately.
Hybrid Typeface
“You are on mute” was our response to COVID-19 pandemic where we all found ourselves trapped online hearing “you’re on mute” every day. The slogan was also a metaphor of young people being neglected and silenced by media, political unrest, uncertainty and the general fear of what was to come.
We also designed “Shhhh!” in our respective alphabets with exclamation marks matching respective cultural contexts. “Shhhh!” was a further play on the idea of being silenced and was a script for our public intervention piece.
Public Intervention
We gathered video material of people from all around Europe saying “Shhhh” with our designs present in the backdrop, spreading the message of our project and adding a unique twist to the concept of a public intervention.
My Contribution
I designed letterforms: t, e, h, S, apostrophe (‘), exclamation mark (!) inspired by traditional Irish signage
Other responsibilities:
Ensuring that the project adhered to the timeline
Coordinating the team across 3 time-zones and ensured that everyone was happy with their work
Being an advocate for experimenting and creating many design iterations during online brainstorming sessions
Creating a YouTube Channel and editing the performance aspect of the project.
